Grandma & Grandpa eager for visit!

My granddaughter Melanie will be coming to visit later this week. We're delighted she's coming and eager to hear about her life in New Orleans. Ward has framed the last four of my prints from an early New Orleans series to give to her. She had 3 or 4 small originals destroyed in her New Orleans home when Katrina hit.

Mel graduated from LSU over a year ago and is now a lovely young woman ready to take on the world. When she was a toddler, I painted a watercolor portrait of her in her "jammies" holding two little dolls - entered it in an exhibit -got a minor ribbon for it. Later I gave it to Terry, my son ( her father) and they've shared the painting ever since. Luckily, when Katrina hit, this painting was hanging in Terry's condo on higher ground and survived the storm. So Melanie has that painting. When I come across a photo of it, I'll share it with you.

Studio update: We are hard at work getting our new print of Old Culver Depot ready for you. More details on this will be posted soon. The original of "Old Culver Depot" is hanging in our gallery. Next to the depot painting is "Uncle John's Barn" another new original.

My frustrating bout with shingles is gradually going away, and I'm working hard on painting a stone seawall in another watercolor house portrait. Will photograph and post it when done.

On Sale until Halloween - Big Scare in Small Town !

  1. Eight years ago, Harvey Firari wrote this book - a fantasy, loosely related to Culver's annual Halloween season scarecrow contest. Noted for his marvelous mastery of acerbic wit, his book will entertain oldsters and young children alike - with many interesting "double meanings" throughout. And Esther has had the thrill of FINALLY (after age 70) achieving her life's goal of becoming a bona fide book illustrator!

Harvey has moved to Cazenovia, New York, to live close to his delightful daughter, Fairlie. Declining eye sight has made it harder for him to communicate. To e-mail him, use a large font and send to Harvey at hfirari@earthlink.net

Check our web site for more details on this book and info on Harvey and take advantage of our special offer to purchase this from now until Halloween for the price of $13.95 (Regular price is $19.95.)

STUDIO UPDATE: Another productive day in my studio. Am in the middle of a house portrait. Have spent many hours working on details of the fieldstone steps in the foreground of this watercolor, with lots of careful drawing and detailed pen and ink accents. When finished I'll photograph it to share with you.

Impatiens in our Garden & newly matted Chief Menominee prints

11:00 P M

Another beautiful day. The recent wonderful rains have made our impatiens plants the nicest we've ever had, and we also have VERY healthy weeds. I must photograph them (the impatiens) - and try to capture them in a small watercolor. Red and white blossoms- might be nice with a small U S flag in their midst.

Today I helped put together several Chief Menominee prints with Ward's poem. Ward put an oak frame on one and is making a nice rustic gray frame for the other one. These have been constant sellers and a gentle reminder of the culture of the American Indian. What a great example they were - as they tried to be kind to their (now "our") environment. Amazing that it was less than 200 years ago when their culture was very dominant in our country.

I've added the Chief Menominee image and Ward's verse to this blog. The Chief and Ward's poem are placed side by side, each in its own opening in one mat. Print includes a certificate of authenticity signed by both Esther and Ward, and a copy of the history behind this print.

Chief Menominee print & poem
in a standard size (20" x 16") mist colored mat. $35.00

All Painter and Poet prints are placed on foam core backings, enclosed in clear plastic covers, and carefully packaged for free shipment inside the U. S. through U S Post Office.
